The Appalachian Mountains are among the oldest on Earth. They rose hundreds of millions of years ago, when continents collided in slow motion over unimaginable spans of time. Before that, the rocks beneath our feet were sediments at the bottom of ancient seas, and before that, the atoms in those rocks were forged in the hearts of stars. In Big History terms, our story begins with the birth of the universe itself — and West Virginia is a chapter written in stardust.

Fast forward to the Carboniferous Period, about 300 million years ago. This land was a vast swamp, thick with towering ferns and giant trees.
